Full Description
Population by Age data is extracted from table B01001 and the race- and ethnicity-subtables of The American Community Survey (ACS), specifically tables B01001A through B01001I. We also calculated the number and percent of non-Hispanic residents for all years, geographies, gender, and age cohorts. The ACS collects data from a sample of the population on a rolling monthly basis. 1, 3, and 5-year aggregates are released annually. Beginning in 2000, questions about race were reformatted to allow surveyed individuals to select one or more races. The Census also asked individuals to identify Hispanic origin separate from race. While the race and ethnicity subtables options for B01001 include combinations of two or more specific race designation (e.g White and Asian or Asian and Alaska Native), we have chosen not to include those subsets of the data. The age cohorts presented in the race- and ethnicity-specific subtables differ from those in the B01001. In order to enable comparison across all available variables, we have aggregated all data to use the more restrictive age cohort groupings. Margins of error were recalculated using the formulas as defined by the US Census in their Compass handbooks. Percentages for each disaggregation were also calculated along with corresponding margins of error. The denominator for any given percentage calculation was the total population for given geography in the given year. For example, the percentage of 0-4, Male, Hispanic in Hartford in 2011-2015 was calculated using the total population of Hartford in 2011-2015. The methodology used to compute the total state-level population estimates differ from those used to produced the subcounty estimates. This alternate methodology does not generate a margin of error estimate. In our data tables, margins of error for those values will be reported as zero.
